(11/4/16) – Palatine [Day 1]

The Palatine Hill, looming over 30m’s over the Forum, is again traditionally credited to Romulus and the foundations of the city. Indeed, Iron Age huts (dating from the 9th and 8th Centuries BC) attest to the Archaic origins of this hill. Below is a painted vault from the House of Augustus on the Palatine, you may just be able to make out the small thunderbolts, perhaps this was a sanctuary to protect him from feared thunder and lightning…!
